Tchotiashvili

A family winery in the village of Saniore near Telavi, on the left bank of the Alazani Valley by the rivers Lopota and Stori. The family has made wine in qvevri here since the early 18th century and the sixth generation carries on the tradition; in 2002 the brothers Kakha and Ucha Tchotiashvili planted rare varieties alongside the old vineyards, and in 2013 the family business became the company Satsnakheli. The vineyards cover 12 hectares at 420–450 m with more than 40 varieties, of which twelve Georgian (Rkatsiteli, Mtsvane, Kisi, Khikhvi, Chitistvala, Kakhuri Mtsvivani, Tavkveri, Saperavi, Budeshuri Saperavi, Muscat Rkatsiteli, Grdzelmtevana, Mkhargrdzeli) and two European (Montepulciano and Shiraz) are in production; the rest form an ampelographic plot for experimental wines. About 55 tonnes of grapes are processed a year. Wine is made by the traditional Kakhetian method: 22 Kakhetian qvevri in the old cellar and, since 2019, an underground cellar with 23 more (10 Kakhetian and 13 Imeretian); Caucasian and French oak barrels are also used. A bottling line was installed in 2018; labels are filled in and applied by hand and the bottles are sealed with wax. The winemaker and technologist is Kakha Tchotiashvili.
